The next software company looks less like a traditional product team and more like a governed production system, where the limiting factor is not typing speed but operational control.
The traditional product team is organized around human coordination. Work moves through meetings, tickets, sprint planning, pull requests, review queues, release windows, and incident retrospectives, with developers acting as skilled producers who carry large amounts of context in their heads. That structure is already strained in ordinary software organizations, because every new dependency, service, regulation, customer requirement, and deployment target adds more coordination cost than teams want to admit.
An AI driven software factory changes the shape of that organization, but not in the clean way vendor slides imply. Engineers spend less time personally authoring every patch and more time defining the production machinery that decides what autonomous systems may do. They maintain validators, policy files, sandbox profiles, tool contracts, secrets boundaries, cost limits, audit schemas, and remediation patterns, because those artifacts become the difference between controlled throughput and uncontrolled churn.
The factory metrics are therefore different. Cognitive throughput is constrained by sandbox capacity, validation coverage, trace quality, policy specificity, and the ability to turn repeated failures into reusable skills and loop patterns. A company that can run thousands of generated changes but cannot prove which ones are safe has not built a factory, it has built a backlog generator with higher compute bills. A company that treats validators as optional test hygiene will find that review pressure simply reappears downstream, where the failures are harder to explain.
The index is deliberately sober about this because CSG is not another agent framework and not a replacement for developers. It is an operating model for bounded autonomous participation in software work. Organizations that keep human coordination as the primary safety mechanism while increasing machine generation will drown in review, while organizations that remove humans without building governance will ship systems they cannot account for. Neither failure mode is theoretical anymore.
